The beneficial outgrowths of a tree-littered and -lined community are many, according to Mayors Take the Lead in this week’s issue of Newsweek (4/16/07). The article presents a municipal focus on the benefits of going green – not only in terms of SAVINGS, but also in terms of PROFITS. For example:
“Research has shown that people are willing to spend up to 12 percent more on a product if they’re shopping in a district with mature trees,” thanks to the pleasant ambiance of the neighborhood, says Environment Commissioner Sadhu Johnston.
Twelve percent?! For that, I’d install a tree in the middle of my store.
